OfficeMax National Survey Finds Many Working Americans Want to Improve "Green ...
/PRNewswire/ --This month, many Americans are not only evaluating their personal lives but also their places of business. According to OfficeMax's 2011 Green Workplace survey(1), companies are making strides in adopting environmentally-responsible business practices, and many employees make it their personal mission to be mindful of the environment at the office. But as far as the average working American is concerned, U.S. companies and employees could improve greatly when it comes to "going green" at work, and it's up to every single person in the workplace to make it happen.Nearly two in three (64%) working Americans think their current employer could do a better job of being environmentally-responsible, such as recycling paper or refilling ink cartridges . This may result from companies not effectively encouraging "green" business practices with only about one third (39%) promoting recycling bins around the office, nearly one in seven (13%) assigning someone to oversee "green" practices, and only eight percent (8%) of companies offering incentives or rewards to employees for participating in "green" programs.
The majority (84%) of working Americans say they personally recycle things such as paper at work, and four in ten (40%) of these employees are motivated by their desire to set an example for coworkers. Others admit they are motivated to personally recycle by wanting to help the environment (64%) or have a personal desire to make a difference in the world (58%). Yet, scrutiny among fellow coworkers is high with nearly three quarters (73%) of professionals saying their current colleagues could improve their habits to reduce their company's environmental footprint.
Sixty-three percent (63%) of professionals who aren't already doing everything they can to be environmentally-responsible agree they would be more motivated to adopt environmental practices at work if their company offered incentives. While a cash incentive (61%) is nice for some, it doesn't take a lot to motivate most employees. An extra vacation day (46%), free lunch or party (44%), or special "green" gift (39%) would be all they need to take part. Yet, with or without incentives, nearly seven in ten (68%) surveyed professionals believe everyone is responsible for carrying out environmentally-responsible behaviors at work.

The company hopes that the new initiative will bolster consumer participation in OfficeMax's long running printer ink recycling and refilling program. When consumers come in to take advantage of the recycling program, they will be offered a $10 savings
On a recent Saturday morning, Josie O'Donnell, co-captain of the Curves Relay for Life team, along with her husband, loaded their pick-up full of bags of cans, down spouts, gutters, pots and pans for their bi-annual trip to the recycling center.
The goal of the program, designed by OfficeMax's social media AOR Tribal DDB New York, is to increase consumer participation in the company's ink recycling and refilling program. The company created the initiative in 2006 to allow consumers to refill

When I opened my new color ink cartridge I was pleasantly surprised.
Inside the box was a self sealing, prepaid envelope for me to send my old cartridge in for recycling.
Within 3 minutes of installing my new cartridge the old one was in the mailbox to be picked up.
A prepaid pre-addressed envelope will:
Eliminate mistakes in shipping addresses Eliminate the knowledge needed as to "How to package for return?" Eliminate my need for having to store supplies needed to return the cartridge Eliminate me having to guess or calculate exact postage Make me recycle something I would normally toss in the trash
How do I know all this.
When I replaced the other ink cartridge (black) , the only thing in the box was a small card saying if I wanted to recycle at my expense to send it to the address on the card.
I threw the old cartridge in the trash because I didn't want to expend the effort involved in sending it back.
NOTE: I do recycle on a weekly basis...but not this time. The cost didn't seem to warrant it.
Hassle free is what customers want.
Map your process and minimize the workload you ask your customers to do Use KISS principles (keep it short and simple) to streamline the flow Watch your customer base grow
On a final note - I did recycle the box and the little instruction card for both cartridges. I'm not a complete ogre.
