• "The thirtieth annual convention of the Alabama Educational Association will convene in the Lyric Theatre this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock and from the indications at present there will be about two thousand delegates in attendance. The address of welcome will be delivered by Mr. Richard Hines, Jr., a member of the county school board, who will be introduced by Dr. W.H. Sledge, president of the board."

• "Mr. George A. Riviere, French consul at Mobile yesterday received notification from Mr. Many Francastel, general consul of France at New Orleans, that in the unavoidable absence of Ambassador Jusserand, he would act as the representative of France at the forthcoming celebration of the bicentenary of Mobile."

• "Mr. John B. Waterman, who was yesterday operated on for appendicitis, is reported to have stood the operation well and there was a noticeable improvement in his condition last night."

• "Burns suffered by a young boy and his rescuer when the latter attempted to extinguish the child's burning clothing, and traffic accidents went six persons to a Mobile hospital Easter Sunday.

"Three-year-old Robert Hinton, Toulminville, suffered severe burns of the face and body when his clothing caught fire from an open charcoal furnace. The accident occurred when the father of the child poured gasoline on the furnace. ... City Hospital authorities reported his condition Sunday night as 'fair.'

"Harris K. Cosminsky, 303 South Dearborn Street, was released from the hospital ater being treated for burns of the left leg and thigh, received while trying to rescue the child."

• " 'Big Bill' Harrison skippered his catboat, the Lynn, to a two-minute victory over Joe Arns' Silver Spray in the first of a three-race series between the boats Sunday afternoon off Arlington Beach."

• "Tom Klumpp and Tom Saul advanced into the quarter-finals of the championship flight of the annual Spring Hill championship tournament Sunday afternoon.

"Klumpp staged a blistering closing nine rally to stage a major upset in eliminating Bill Allen, Chickasaw titlist, two and one. Saul defeated Horace Culver, veteran stroke-maker, four and two."

Thursday, April 13, 1961:

• "Capt. Hubert Low, skipper of the charter fishing boat, Pompano II, out of Orange Beach, displays a 300-pound ocean sunfish which was caught on a light trolling rod and reel less than a half mile offshort. Measuring five feet in length and six feet from top to bottom, (the fish) took the whole party of guests to get the huge specimen on board the ship.
