Bands travel to Reno Jazz Festival « The Roosevelt News

The Roosevelt Jazz Choir and Jazz Band III competed in the Reno Jazz Festival in Reno, Nevada last weekend. The Jazz Choir received an average score of 952 points out of a possible 1000, placing fifth in its division. The jazz band didn’t place.

Although the choir expected to place higher, several members said their performance was the best this year. The set included No More Blues, by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the classic Neal Hefti composition Splanky.

Folsom High School, from Folsom, California, and Hamilton High School, from Los Angeles, California were among the choirs that scored higher than Roosevelt. Unlike Roosevelt, which performed traditional swing songs, Folsom and Hamilton performed modern-style songs that incorporated elements of R&B and hip-hop. Folsom even performed a song from Battlestar Galactica.

Although Jazz Band II usually competes in the Reno Jazz Festival, this year it traveled to Savanna, Georgia to compete in the Swing Central festival instead.
