Royal wedding a boon for region's British shops

WATERLOO REGION — Tony Armstrong may want to send Prince William and Kate Middleton a commission cheque at the end of this week.

Barely a year into business with his British Pride Bakery in Hespeler, the Plymouth-born man is busier than ever thanks to the greatest free advertising event he’s ever seen — a royal wedding.

Customers planning Will and Kate wedding parties have been buying English treats by the boxload here, trying to recreate pieces of the nuptial menu and looking for authentic pasties, meat pies and puddings. At Armstrong’s store, the most sought-after commodity is Devon cream teas, a scone topped with jam and real Devonshire cream, a fatty, clotted cream he imported from England.

“The cream was a nightmare to get here, but it’s the magic that makes a Devon cream tea,” he said. “We’ll sell at least 1,500 of them this week … This wedding is bringing a whole new lot of people into our bakery.”

Likewise, the royal couple’s nuptials have been a boon for British import and food stores around the region. Schools, nursing homes and British clubs planning to celebrate Will and Kate’s big day are buying all things English — from wedding trinkets to Union Jack flags to specialty food.

One of the most in-demand items is the McVitie’s Rich Tea biscuit, a humble, imported cookie that has found new fame as the key ingredient in one of the royal wedding cakes. The biscuits are crumbled up and mixed with dark chocolate, condensed milk, a bit of butter, some nuts, and raisins — a favourite treat of Prince William when he was a child.

Wedding watchers across Waterloo Region have been snapping up the biscuits trying to make their own Prince William cake.

“I’ve been selling out of Rich Tea biscuits all week. Everybody wants to have them,” said Karen Bullock, owner of the Best of British in the Southworks Outlet Mall in Galt.

The wedding has been great for business, she said, and on Friday, she’ll be offering free cake and tea to customers between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Armstrong, meanwhile, says he’ll open at 4 a.m. Friday to serve a traditional English breakfast if enough customers demand it.

Sean Rogers, owner of The Savoury store in Uptown waterloo, said he’s been selling “a ton” of tea biscuits, as well as potato scones, black pudding and other British Isles foods to people planning to get up long before the sun to watch the royal wedding.
