Classic rock blares over the rhythmic tat-a-tat of industrial sewing machines, and the atmosphere is electrified with welding sparks from time to time inside the Schauenburg Flexadux Corporation.
The $10 million dollar company at 2233 Sanford Dr. in Grand Junction is one of the leading manufacturers of flexible fiberglass ducting for the mining industry.
“There are three major divisions to this,” explained John Kelleher, president of the company, as he crossed from the business offices to the factory.
The plant floor is divided into three sections.
In the first section, Linda Torline, production foreman, explained the process of making flexible ducting, which is used to pump fresh air deep inside mine tunnels.
Large sheets of vinyl are folded and sewn into tubes using an industrial sewing machine. The bolsters of vinyl are made in the U.S. or Canada and shipped direct to the factory.
The sewn material is then fitted with steel circular supports that open the tube to allow airflow.
“This is positive pressure ducting, so it blows up like a fire hose,” Kelleher said.
This type of ducting, Kelleher explained, is used primarily in the gold mines of Nevada.
The next section of the warehouse gets a little sticky. Here, the employees make fiberglass ducting by spooling long strings of fiberglass thread around an oval-shaped form.
The fiber is then coated in a thick black resin that resembles tar. Next, the wet tubing is baked in a large low-temperature oven to cure.
“This product is totally unique to us,” Kelleher said. “We use a phenolic resin as compared to a polyester resin.”
That distinction means the ducting is extremely fire resistant and more durable, he said.
Those are the primary products produced at the factory, which supports 30 employees.
The third part of the plant, however, creates some of the most interesting designs.
It is a 10,500-square-foot steel fabricating shop, which manufactures heavy-duty steel structures used in the mining and drilling industries.
Equipped with a 15-ton overhead crane, the fabricators in the steel shop make very large and heavy pieces of metal equipment, housing, and other products for a variety of industries.
On the day of the tour, an oarshoot for the Climax mine in Henderson, Utah, was under construction in this part of the plant, as well as conveyor drive for FMC Technologies.
