Can the Tea Party brew up a storm for 2012?
A series of misplaced presumptions have brought me to the Ameris Bank on East Main Street, Woodstock, about 30 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia.
I'm the only customer in the branch, which has low walnut counters and not a bullet-proof shield in sight. On the wall, an antique musket in a glass case is the only visible sign of armoury, and even it would be difficult to reach in a tight spot. Perhaps the large oil painting above the door - a dramatically-rendered American eagle, pouncing on a scrap of doomed wildlife - is disincentive enough to rob the joint; who knows? Behind me, bank employees murmur among themselves at tactfully-spaced desks. But I am more focused on the clerk in front of me - Bernadette - who fixes me with an evaluative stare.
"Yes?"
I came to Woodstock for a meeting with the most powerful woman in America's Tea Party movement, the group of evangelical constitutionalists who keep Democrats and Republicans up at night, for differing reasons.
And I met her, all right.
But now I can't get back to Atlanta. The misplaced presumptions?
1) That a town like Woodstock would have any sort of public transport service.
2) That - in the event that presumption 1) fell over and it transpired that the only feasible route back to Atlanta involved the costly engagement of Janet Jackson's former driver - a town like Woodstock would have an automatic teller machine.
I am subjecting myself to the gimlet eye of Bernadette because I finally recalled that in my purse I harbour a wrinkled travellers' cheque to the value of one hundred dollars. It is this grimy artefact - already rejected once at a general store and again at the post office - that I now offer to Bernadette, and finally my luck changes.
My presumptions haven't served me well so far in Woodstock.
Like meeting Jenny Beth Martin, leader and spokeswoman for the Tea Party Patriots. Based on the collected archive of footage from Tea Party rallies, I thought it reasonable to hope that Ms Martin might front in the frilled garb of an eighteenth-century Bostonian, or at the very least in a hat to which a brace of Liptons Jigglers had been defiantly stapled.
No dice. Ms Martin, who met me in the neutral territory of a Woodstock public garden rotunda, was dressed in neat jeans, pressed collared shirt and jacket, her only accessory a taciturn press adviser called Kevin.
Three years ago, Jenny Beth Martin was not primarily concerned with federal budget issues. She was more concerned with the collapse of the family business, which cost her, with husband Lee and their young twins, the family home as well.
